Legendary music star, Prince, died at 10:07 a.m on Thursday. He was 57.
Sheriff deputies responded to a 911 call at Prince’s Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, where he was found unresponsive in an elevator. Paramedics’ attempts at CPR were ultimately unsuccessful and the singer was pronounced dead less than half an hour later.
A representative reported that Prince had been suffering from the flu for several weeks preceding his demise.
A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince rose to prominence in the 1980s. He was known for Billboard hits, such as “Purple Rain” and “When Doves Cry.”
“The world lost a creative icon,” President Obama said. “Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all. Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.”
An autopsy has been scheduled on Friday to determine the causes surrounding his death.
