The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with a concert featuring the American composer Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question and Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto on January 18. The orchestra will also pay tribute to Leong Yoon Pin (1932 - 2011), the most important of Singapore’s pioneering composers, whose Dayong Sampan Overture was the first Singaporean composition ever played by the SSO.
The concerto soloist for the 40th anniversary gala will be Singaporean pianist Lim Yan, the new artistic director of the Singapore International Piano Festival. The concert will be conducted by SSO’s outgoing music director Lan Shui. It will be his penultimate performance in that role. The programme also includes Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
